Plants and zootoxins: Toxico-epidemiological investigation in domestic animals

An epidemiological study on animal poisoning due to plants and zootoxins has been carried out by the Poison Control Centre of Milan (CAV) in collaboration with University (Italy). During period January 2015–March 2019, CAV received 932 calls poisonings, 12.66% (n = 118) which were related zootoxins. Among these, 95 enquiries (80.51%) concerned exposures 23 (19.49%) The dog was species most frequently involved (67.80% calls, n 80), followed cat (26.27%, 31). As for plants, several episodes glycoside-, alkaloid-, oxalate- diterpenoid-containing species. Cycas revoluta, Euphorbia pulcherrima Hydrangea macrophylla often reported plants. outcome half (51.58%, 49) it fatal 3 animals (6.12%). Regarding zootoxins, majority asp viper (Vipera aspis), but pine processionary moth (Thaumetopoea pityocampa), common toad (Bufo), fire salamander (Salamandra), jellyfish (phylum Cnidaria) also reported. known 65.22% cases just one episode. This investigation depicts an interesting overview issue plant zootoxin domestic animals, highlighting relevance these agents as causes providing useful information prevention diagnosis.
